Mission Statement
The Mission of the Diversity Committee of the College of Arts and Sciences is to promote and celebrate mutual understanding, dignity, respect, and cooperation among all ethnic, racial, religious, and social groups at The University of Alabama, and to actively discourage and prevent discriminatory practices toward any group.
Goals
1. Provide mechanisms for information dissemination and promotion of diversity.
2. Promote and encourage recruitment of a diverse faculty:
3. Maintain and increase diversity through retention of faculty in a highly competitive environment.
4. Sponsor guest scholars and academic programs that explore diversity in specific academic areas such as African-American history, comparative religions, gender issues, etc.
5. Encourage programs, seminars and workshops that explore diversity issues.
6. Support the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body.
7. Encourage a diversified core curriculum that would enable discussion and learning about geographic, social, and cultural differences to raise awareness of the global community.
8. Support the development of a diversity course at the core curriculum level.
9. Encourage the University to fund graduate students and faculty for research on diversity issues.
10. Develop strategies to recognize and celebrate activities and people who contributed to our progress, as an institution, toward integration. Specifically,
a. Memorialize Foster Auditorium
b. Gather oral histories from those who participated in the movement toward integration, including majority student, faculty, and staff.
c. Develop a process to recognize members of the community who are currently making substantial contributions to the development of diversity on our campus.
11. Identify those behaviors which create a hostile environment for any member of our University.
12. Develop strategies for making members of our community aware of acts that create a hostile environment for others.

14. Develop a strategy to prepare and present position papers on divisive issues such as affirmative action.
15. Encourage and promote an African-American Studies major.
